10 Years of EMJM ACES-STAR: A Master’s Programme with real-world impact

PRAXI Network is one of the leading organisations supporting innovation and technology transfer at both national and European level, providing high value-added services to companies, academic institutions, and organisations.

Leveraging its extensive experience and expertise, PRAXI Network supports the University of Crete in the co-organisation of the ACES-STAR Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Aquaculture, Environment and Society.

This year, the programme celebrates ten years of successful operation, during which it has welcomed ten consecutive student cohorts. In total, 183 students from more than 50 countries around the world have participated — a testament to the programme’s strong international dimension.

The program also collaborates with 60 institutions worldwide, which provide support in areas such as student internships, research projects, educational field trips, and more.

A Unique Learning Experience

The EMJM ACES-STAR offers a truly unique academic experience, delivered across three leading European universities with specialised expertise in aquaculture research and practice:

This multi-institutional format offers students valuable exposure to different academic cultures, ecosystems, and methodologies.

Guest Scholars and Networking Opportunities

Over the past decade, participants have had the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops by renowned scientists and respected industry professionals, greatly enriching both their academic understanding and career prospects.

Career Opportunities

At the same time, the programme’s close ties with the aquaculture industry and related sectors have opened up excellent professional networking opportunities.

The programme’s success is clearly reflected in the career paths of its graduates. So far, data shows that:

  • Around 50% of graduates pursue PhD studies at top-tier universities in the UK, Europe, South America, and Australia.
  • The remaining 50% work professionally in the aquaculture sector or in related fields such as environmental organisations, regulatory agencies, and NGOs.
  • Many alumni have also published research articles in reputable scientific journals, further enhancing their academic profile and impact.

Shaping Future Leaders in Aquaculture

The hands-on experience gained through the programme — including internships and thesis projects in real-world settings — equips students to:

  • Take on leadership roles in fish and shellfish production companies,
  • Develop strategies and policies for the sustainable growth of the sector,
  • Foster innovation through applied research and project development.

With ten years of successful operation and a vibrant international network of alumni and partners, the EMJM ACES-STAR continues to evolve, empowering its participants with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to shape the future of the aquaculture sector.
