PRAXI Network, as an organisation supporting research, innovation and entrepreneurship, supports the University of Crete in the implementation of the ACES-STAR Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Aquaculture, Environment and Society (EMJM ACES-STAR).

The EMJM ACES-STAR is an international Master’s programme in the field of aquaculture, combining interdisciplinary education, practical experience and engagement with the academic and professional sectors. The programme is delivered by three European universities and is aimed at students from around the world who wish to acquire specialised knowledge and skills in aquaculture and environmental studies.

Studies at three European Universities

The programme is delivered across three European universities:

• University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland
• University of Crete, Greece
• University of Nantes, France

The programme combines academic training with the practical application of knowledge and engagement with the international aquaculture ecosystem. The study programme includes:

• Three semesters, each lasting six months, at the above institutions.
• A six-month Master’s thesis, carried out in collaboration with an organisation of the student’s choice.
• An optional three-month internship with aquaculture organisations and companies during the second semester.

An important part of the ACES-STAR educational experience is the opportunity for students to engage with distinguished scientists and professionals from the sector.

Over the past 10 years, programme participants have had the opportunity to attend lectures and seminars delivered by distinguished scientists and leading aquaculture professionals, expanding their knowledge and developing their professional networks.

Career prospects for graduates

Career development is an important part of the programme. According to available data on ACES-STAR graduates:

• 50% continue their academic careers through PhD studies at universities.
• 50% move directly into the aquaculture industry or related fields, such as the environment, regulatory bodies and non-governmental organisations.
• Many graduates have already published scientific papers in international academic journals.

In addition, from the first semester, the Professional and Entrepreneurial Skills module focuses on developing skills and helps students prepare for their professional careers. It includes, among other areas:

• Interview techniques
• CV preparation
• Using LinkedIn
• Networking and other professional development skills

Students are also encouraged to make use of the ACES-STAR alumni and affiliated partners network, which now includes more than 275 professionals and organisations. Through this network, students can develop professional contacts and explore employment opportunities, including in their home countries.

Key dates

• 4 January – 3 February 2027: applications for full scholarships.
• 3 February – 28 April 2027: applications for fee waivers and self-funded students.

If you are a person with a disability (e.g. long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments) and require specific goods or services related to your disability, such as third-party assistance, adaptations to the working environment, or additional travel/transport costs, you must provide the Coordinating Institution with full details of the type of goods/services required and their costs within two weeks of your arrival for the first semester.

Payment for these goods/services will be provided by the Coordinating Institution from 1 October for the remaining 22 months of the EMJM, or for the number of months during which the goods or services are used or provided to support your disability. For one-off costs, the relevant goods/services will be reimbursed within one month of purchase.

The maximum amount available to cover expenses for a student with a disability is €60,000.
